FLORIOGRAPHY The concept behind this body or work was conceived while researching a Victorian way of communication called Floriography.  By assigning each plant its own specific meaning, uncensored messages could be safely passed from person to person through bouquets.  This coded form of communication originated as a response to the strict regulations set upon the society of their time.   These photographs are enigmatic vignettes based on personal diary entries.  The subject matter in each photograph range from trivial thoughts of the city I was raised in, to intensely personal images of betrayal and lust.  While using the specific meaning each plant has been assigned, I emphasize each plant’s significance to the overall concept of the image by the amount used and selective focus.  I then construct a setting hoping to direct the viewer’s interpretation of the subject without knowing the meaning of each plant.  As these photographs are personal diary entries that I many not otherwise share with the public, I feel that the application of the language of the plants is quite appropriate.  Victorians felt secure expressing their thoughts in a nonverbal way, just as today’s artist convey their true ideas and emotions into their work by way of metaphors and allegories.
