HISTORICAL REENACTMENTS
As a living soul, I am the very contrary of History, I am what believes it, destroys it for the sake of my own history... - Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida
Historical Reenactments is a series of paintings that combine archival historical photos with xerox transfer printing and painting. This series examines how we relate to history through images, specifically focusing on portrait photography, and how history becomes a receptacle into which we pour our own identities, concerns, and distractions. These projections of our contemporary concerns simultaneously refresh history, keeping it alive with our interest, and efface it with irrelevant static. We make history our own, and in the process we change it irrevocably through our perception of it.
